What is Alcoholism?
Alcoholism, also known as alcohol use disorder or alcohol dependency, is chronic illness characterized by craving alcohol, uncontrolled drinking or a preoccupation with alcohol despite any negative consequences. This continued consumption also causes the person to require consuming larger amounts to achieve the same effects as before.
A disorder that can range from mild to severe, Alcohol use disorder (AUD) can cause a detrimental impact on the physical and mental health of the user, as well as causing problems with work, family and friend relationships.
Signs of drinking too much can include an inability to limit the amount of alcohol consumed, neglecting responsibilities due to drinking, experiencing withdrawal symptoms when not drinking, and continuing to drink even when it causes problems in relationships or health.
Other signs may include developing a tolerance to alcohol, needing more to feel its effects, and spending a significant amount of time obtaining, using, and recovering from the effects of alcohol.
What to Expect from Alcohol Withdrawal With & Without Medicated-Assisted-Treatment (MAT)
With MAT:

- Higher risk of severe health issues, including seizures or DTs.
