Alcohol Medications
Naltrexone
An oral medication that helps reduce alcohol cravings by blocking the euphoric effects and feelings of intoxication. This medication allows those with alcohol dependency to reduce their drinking behaviors gradually, helping them to maintain sobriety.
Vivitrol
An injectable form of Naltrexone, administered once a month, which aids in the management of alcohol dependence. Vivitrol works by blocking the pleasurable sensations associated with drinking alcohol, thereby decreasing the urge to drink.
Disulfiram
Disulfiram interferes with the breakdown of alcohol in the body, causing unpleasant symptoms such as nausea and flushing when alcohol is consumed. This deterrent effect helps individuals avoid alcohol consumption.
Acamprosate
This medication helps restore the natural balance of neurotransmitters in the brain in individuals who have recently quit drinking. It is used to prevent people from drinking alcohol again (relapse), working by reducing the physical distress and emotional discomfort people might feel once they stop drinking.

What is Alcoholism?
Alcoholism, also known as alcohol use disorder or alcohol dependency, is chronic illness characterized by craving alcohol, uncontrolled drinking or a preoccupation with alcohol despite any negative consequences. This continued consumption also causes the person to require consuming larger amounts to achieve the same effects as before.
A disorder that can range from mild to severe, Alcohol use disorder (AUD) can cause a detrimental impact on the physical and mental health of the user, as well as causing problems with work, family and friend relationships.
Signs of drinking too much can include an inability to limit the amount of alcohol consumed, neglecting responsibilities due to drinking, experiencing withdrawal symptoms when not drinking, and continuing to drink even when it causes problems in relationships or health.
Other signs may include developing a tolerance to alcohol, needing more to feel its effects, and spending a significant amount of time obtaining, using, and recovering from the effects of alcohol.
What to Expect from Alcohol Withdrawal With & Without Medicated-Assisted-Treatment (MAT)
With MAT:
Medication-Assisted Treatment can significantly ease the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal, providing a more manageable and comfortable experience. Medications like benzodiazepines or other approved treatments may be used to:
- Reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms such as tremors, anxiety, and insomnia.
- Minimize risks associated with severe withdrawal symptoms like seizures.
- Support a smoother transition to ongoing addiction treatment.
Without MAT:
Experiencing withdrawal without medical assistance can be challenging and, in some cases, dangerous. Symptoms can range from mild anxiety and shaking to severe complications such as delirium tremens (DTs). Without MAT, individuals may face:
- Increased intensity of withdrawal symptoms.
- Higher risk of severe health issues, including seizures or DTs.
- A greater likelihood of relapse due to discomfort and cravings.
Renew Health prioritizes safety and effectiveness in managing withdrawal symptoms, offering tailored solutions whether you choose to undergo withdrawal with or without MAT. Our medical team is dedicated to providing the support and care needed to navigate this critical phase of recovery.
